The Excellence of Women: Casulana & Strozzi

After 400 years, the Fieri Consort reveal newly-discovered madrigals of Maddalena Casulana alongside works by another of Italy’s greatest composers, Barbara Strozzi.

In one of the most important discoveries of recent years, the lost Alto partbook of Maddalena Casulana’s 1583 First Book of five-voice madrigals has been found by Professor Laurie Stras.

Living at a time in which women’s creativity was often stifled, Casulana (c.1532 – c.1590) and her compatriot Barbara Strozzi (1619-77) were only too aware their music would be judged inferior to men’s. This concert presents Casulana’s madrigals as a fresh perspective on Strozzi’s works, celebrating both composers’ skill with words and music.

From Church to Tavern: Christmas Cantatas by Christoph Graupner & English tavern songs

Graupner initially pipped Bach to the post of Kantor in Leipzig. Although well preserved, his works fell into obscurity when his heirs were stopped from publishing them. Overall he composed a staggering 1442 cantatas, most of which remain to be discovered.

Fieri Consort and Camerata Øresund will present three cantatas together as well as Graupner’s double violin concerto which easily stands up to its famous counterpart by J.S. Bach along with some festive jollity likely to have been heard in English taverns during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Fieri Consort: “Their glowing sound enhances performances of sheer delight” – Choir & Organ

“Groove comes as a natural state for Camerata Øresund. Each player reflected pure joy of playing, of good music, in good company”  Teater Muusika Magazine (Estonia)

BOZAR: Freeing the Muse

Freeing the Muse explores Renaissance ideals of beauty from a female perspective. In solo music and five-part madrigals by Maddalena Casulana, Raphaella Aleotti and Francesca Caccini, Fieri show that 17th-century women were more than just the muses of male artists. The composers chosen were influential artists who made their creative voices heard in spite of social disadvantages. Female musicians of the period are also brought into the spotlight. How did Tarquinia Molza and the Concerto delle Donne use their virtuosity to send the musical style of the time in a new direction? Fieri Consort reveals the answers.
